🗑️ BIN CHANGES FOR BRAINTREE: COUNCIL CONFIRMS NEW 3-WEEK COLLECTIONS – LETTERS GOING OUT SOON

Residents across the Braintree district are about to find out exactly what bins they’ll be getting under the council’s new waste system, including the much-debated change to collecting black general waste only once every three weeks.

Letters are being sent to all households by the end of November 2025, confirming what type of containers each property will receive, based on recent council assessments.

Most homes will swap their clear recycling sacks for two 40-litre wheelie bins, while food waste and green waste (for those subscribed at £55 a year) will stay the same.

What the New System Looks Like

Here’s the full breakdown:

✔️ General Waste Black bins will be collected once every 3 weeks.

✔️ Recycling Two new wheelie bins:

• One paper & card bin

• One mixed recycling bin (glass, plastic, tins, cartons)Each collected alternately every 2 weeks.

✔️ Food Waste Still collected weekly.

Some properties, especially flats, homes with access restrictions, or properties with no gardens will receive alternative containers, such as four 55-litre lidded boxes for separated recycling instead of wheelie bins.

Because of the multiple streams, the council says the collection calendar will become more “complex” from June 1, 2026.

If residents believe their property has been incorrectly assessed, they will be able to request a review, with full details included in the letter.

Cllr Tom Cunningham, deputy leader and cabinet member for transformation and the environment, said the changes are aimed at reducing black-bin waste and boosting recycling rates:

“We’ve taken great care to assess each property fairly. These changes are designed to make recycling easier, reduce waste, and create a cleaner, greener Braintree district.”

The council says the new system will help households “recycle more from their doorstep” and cut down overall waste volumes.

Letters for households with communal bins are also being issued in November, outlining next steps for assessment.

This move to 3-week general waste collections has sparked plenty of opinions across the district, especially for larger families or residents worried about space, smells, and overflowing bins.

So let’s open it up 👇

Do you support the switch to a 3-week black bin collection?

Are you happy with more recycling bins, or is it too complicated?

Do you think Braintree is moving in the right direction with waste, or is this a step too far?

So I live in a flat and it is suggested that you’re going to deliver 4 x 55 litre bins, guess where they will be going. I don’t have room for 4 bins in my flat!
